The other three rely on the protection build into Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. One enjoys the protection of the product under test, naturally. For the test, we launch each URL in four browsers. We collect both verified phish and URLs too new to have a verdict, hundreds of each. To test phishing protection, we capture the very latest reported frauds from sites that track such things. That’s not necessarily a good thing, given that it did absolutely nothing in the test using malicious URLs. Qihoo’s browser extension should identify and block phishing websites just as it does malware-hosting sites. Most antivirus tools that protect web surfers from visiting dangerous sites also divert them away from frauds. A phishing site looks just like the real site it imitates some may even direct you to the real site after harvesting your username and password. Phishing fraudsters skip the hard parts and simply trick the hapless user into giving away important account credentials.

Writing malware code that can steal private data without getting caught is tough. McAfee, Sophos Home Free, and Vipre all achieved 100 percent protection, and five others scored 95 percent or higher. Other products have done much better in this test. Qihoo did manage to detect and eliminate 87 percent of the malware downloads, a score that puts it just barely in the top half of recently tested products. It may be that Qihoo’s system relies on a blacklist approach that doesn’t get updated quickly enough to handle the newest dangerous pages. However, in testing it did not exhibit any sign of this protection. Qihoo’s settings page clearly indicates that it offers malicious website blocking, and that this feature is enabled even in the default security mode. Many products wipe out 80 percent or more on sight, and G Data Antivirus has the distinction of recognizing 98 percent of this sample collection at a glance. It eliminated 72 percent of the samples at this point, which is a little low. This time around, it started eliminating samples it recognized before we ever opened the folder, just as Adaware Antivirus Free did. In the past, we found that Qihoo’s real-time scanning didn’t kick in until a program was just about to execute. Others, like Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Webroot, don't react until the samples are copied to a new location or otherwise saved to disk. Many products, including Avira and Microsoft Windows Defender Security Center, spring into action at this point. Our basic protection test starts when we open a folder containing a collection of sample malware. When there are no lab results, these hands-on tests are the only method we have for measuring a product’s effectiveness. Poor Malware Protection ScoresĮven when a product has stellar results from multiple labs, we still put it through hands-on on malware protection testing. Bitdefender reached 9.8, with results from just three labs. Kaspersky and Norton both have an aggregate score of 9.7. These three scored 9.6, 9.6, and 8.9 respectively.Ĭommercial products have done better, but not by much. I have an algorithm that normalizes test results to a ten-point scale and generates an aggregate lab score. A product with no test results is automatically a bit sketchy.Īt the other end of the spectrum, Avast, Avira Free Security, and Windows Defender all appear in reports from all four labs. And finally, the product performed well in testing. The security company thought getting tested was worth the cost. The labs though the product was important enough to test. For testing purposes, I ignored them all.

I imagine Qihoo gets some small affiliate income when you choose to install these. The installer also prompts you to install a plethora of unrelated “popular software.” Programs offered include Skype, Line, WhatsApp, OpenOffice, and WinRAR, among others.

The mini-installer downloads and executes the latest version of the full install program. Installing this product is quick and simple.

This free software piles on tons of bonus features, but those features can’t make up for the fact that its core antivirus isn’t up to par. Alas, Qihoo 360 Total Security isn’t one of them. You need security software that keeps up, and you don’t necessarily have to pay, as many free antivirus utilities are quite effective. Malware coders keep refining their data-stealing Trojans, computer-controlling bots, and file-encrypting ransomware. Anyone? Let’s hope all hands are still down. Raise your hand if you think it’s fine to go without antivirus protection on your PC.
